The temple was built during the Zhenguan Years of Tang Dynasty named Doulv Temple, then renamed Shouan Temple. When it was restored under the Qing, it was given another name: the Temple of Universal Awakening. There is a bronze recumbent Buddha inside the Temple, which is how it received the name of Wofo Temple.

Wofo Temple, Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is located in the south foot of Shouniu Mountain, the east side of Fragrant Hill, about 30 kilometers from downtown Beijing. The temple was built during the Zhenguan Years of Tang Dynasty named Doulv Temple, then renamed Shouan Temple. When it was restored under the Qing, it was given another name: the Temple of Universal Awakening. Facing south, the temple is symmetrically laid out in three parts. The middle part consists of Merits Pool, Bell Tower and Drum Tower, Shanmen Hall, Four Heavenly Kings Hall, Triple World Buddhist Hall, Reclining Buddha Hall, Depository of Buddhist Sutras. The two sides are Bodhidharma Hall and other side halls as Prince Siddhartha Hall etc. The eastern part of the temple is the living place of monks including Abstinence Hall, Buddhist Hall, Jiyong Pavilion, Qingliang Pavilion, Patriarch Courtyard etc. The western part has five courtyards consist of three temporary imperial palaces. Thus, the eastern and western part are known as “Three Places and Six Courtyards”. Within the hall, a bronze statue of Sakyamuni is laying; which is also known as ‘Recumbent Buddha’, the most famous and precious collection of the temple.
