Opposite the gate stands a well preserved screen wall, mounting block and Guangliang (wide and bright) gate, a house type exclusively for the senior officials. This is the former residence of Zhang Zhidong, one of the representatives of Self-Strengthening Movement (1681-1985) in the late Qing Dynasty. The residence was originally a big three-entrance courtyard, where eastside was Zhang’s mansion and west side was the affiliated garden. The two courtyards were connected by a gate. There was a back door which leads to the famous Shichahai scenic area.
