The Randeng Pagoda is one of the Cultural Relics Units in Beijing, located in the north of Tongzhou district. It was constructed in the Southern and Northern Dynasties and renovated quite a few times during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
This tower has eight rolling tips and 13 floors and consists of bricks without room inside. It is as tall as 45 meters. It has a lotus cushion and delicate carvings can be found on each of its sides. Inside the hole facing the south sits an ancient Buddha, named Randeng (Dīpankara), the teacher of Gautama Buddha. Therefore, this pagoda was named RandengPagoda.
The other three sides of it have fake doors and windows. Above the pagoda’s frame are 13 floors of delicate design, and on it there is a wood board, on which four Chinese characters (万古流芳: Good name will be passed to numerous generations to come) are inscribed. If you are careful, you will be able to see the 2,224 wind-bells on it and the 415 carved Buddhas’ statues. The decoration of the top of the pagoda is a octagonal Buddhist cushion shape, on which a lotus is placed. On top of the spike of the pagoda are very delicately designed ornaments including jewels.
Originally an elm tree once grew on top of the pagoda and was several meters tall and looked lush. To protect the ancient pagoda, the tree has been removed.
