The Grand Canal of China was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in June 2014. The series of heritage sites declared for the Grand Canal selected typical sections of the canal and important heritage sites along each section, including 27 sections of canal heritage with a total length of 1,011 kilometers, and a total of 58 related heritage sites. The heritage types include canal waterworks relics such as locks, embankments, dams, bridges, water city gates, cableways, wharves, and dangerous works, as well as supporting facilities and management facilities for the Grand Canal, such as warehouses, yamen, post stations, palaces, guild halls, and toll stations, and some ancient buildings and historic cultural districts closely related to the cultural significance of the Grand Canal. The total area of the heritage site is 20,819 hectares, and the total area of the buffer zone is 54,263 hectares. The canals in Beijing that are included in the heritage list are the Beijing Old City section of the Tonghui River in Xicheng District - Shichahai (including Qianhai, Houhai, and Xihai), the Yuhu River ancient channel in the Beijing Old City section of the Tonghui River in Dongcheng District (from Wanning Bridge in the west to Dongbuya Bridge in the east, about 0.5 kilometers long), and the Tonghui River section in Tongzhou District (from Yongtong Bridge in the west to Tongzhou Beiguan Lock in the east, about 5 kilometers long). The heritage sites include Chengqing Shang Lock (Wanning Bridge) in Xicheng District and Chengqing Zhong Lock (Dongbuya Bridge) in Dongcheng District.
