Wangmazi

Speaking of scissors, in China, an old saying goes “there is Zhangxiaoquan in the south, and Wangmazi in the north.” As two magnates in this industry, both of them receives wide attention and good comments.

Wangmazi was found in Qing Dynasty (1651), which is a well-known time-honored brand and its forging technique was labeled as national non-material cultural heritage by the State Council.

The origin of this name is quite interesting. It is said that when the shop was built, the owner was a man who has a pockmarked face and therefore was called “Wangmazi” by customers and peers. At first, the shop did not manufacture scissors, and it purchased scissors from the folk. In order to guarantee the quality, the owner did the purchase personally, sticking to the strict purchasing principle, and only the fist-rate scissors could be sold in the shop. So the shop was famous for its high quality and people from all the country came here to buy scissors. Customers courteously called it “Wangmazi Scissor Shop”.
