Beijing Zoo

Beijing Zoo was built in 1906, and is located in the "Agricultural Experiment Field" outside Xizhimen, which was originally the "two gardens and two temples" of Le Shan Garden, Ji Garden, Guang Shan Temple and Hui An Temple. It was prepared by the Ministry of Commerce by decree and consists of three parts: the zoo, the botanical garden, and the agricultural experiment. The earliest zoo is located on the east side of the park, covering an area of 1.5 hectares, wich was the earliest zoo open to the public in China and the earliest park open to the public in North China. It is also said to be the birthplace of modern zoos, botanical gardens and museums in China.
Beijing Zoo was officially named in 1955 and currently covers an area of about 90 hectares. The zoo exhibits about 5000 rare wild animals of 500 species and receives 5 million visitors from home and abroad annually, performing the function of a national zoo. Beijing Zoo adheres to the work philosophy of "education and protection, safety and service," and focuses on the goal of building Beijing into a world city. It strives to become a name card of Beijing, which shows the style of the capital to domestic visitors and the image of China to foreign visitors. Beijing Zoo is a national key park, a national key cultural relics protection unit, a national science education base, and a national 4A-level scenic spot.
