In 1953, 13 persons from the same village in Hunan bought this cold drink shop, and renovated it into a restaurant selling Hunan flavor dishes, named "Makai Restaurant". Makai Restaurant is specialized in Hunan dishes, Due to its unique characteristics, the restaurant enjoy fame in Beijing. It was one of the rareHunan restaurants in Beijing in the early years. Makai Restaurant sells more than 300 types of Hunan dishes, including traditional dishes like Braised Pork, Sour and Hot Pig Stomach, Nourishing Turtle (Steamed), Appetizing King Fish Head, and special dishes that are different from other Hunan restaurant, like Jade Belt Mandarin Fish Rolls, Roasted Chicken and Ham Splashed with Sesame Oil, and Brush-pot-shaped Sour and Hot Squid.


There are a variety of Hunan dishes at Ma Kai Restaurant, featuring smoked, soy-bean and chopped chili dishes. Diyangyan promoted the restaurant and it has once been awarded “Scientific Progress of Beijing”.
Recommended dishes: Tong’an Chicken, Foshou Squid, Chaiba Chicken, Doujiao Zheng Lahe, Huaitai Duck.
Ma Kai Restaurant has won many national prizes since it opened. Apart from Hunan cuisine, it also serves Beijing Roast Duck and home-made rice dumplings, sweet dumplings and moon cakes with preserved meat and hams. With a two-floor building, the restaurant covers about 700 square meters and can accommodate about 500 people at the same time. There are 8 different-styled private rooms in total.
