Dawa Village

Dawa Village, nestled in Hebei province, is a charming and historical stone village. This village covers an area of 25 square kilometers.

A historical legacy
Legend has it that during the Ming Dynasty, a family with the surname Zhang settled here. According to family records, the village has been home to the Zhang family for 28 generations, with no other surnames ever settling here. This makes Dawa Village a unique family-centric village.

Unique stone architecture
Due to the geographical constraints, land in the village is limited. As a result, villagers have built their homes halfway up the mountains using locally sourced stones. These stone structures resemble a fairytale “stone kingdom”, with roads, terraces, and houses all constructed like a giant puzzle.

Over 60% of the stone houses are well-preserved, maintaining their original appearance. The village also retains many traditional stone tools from the 1940s and 1950s, such as millstones and stone mortars, which add to the rustic charm of the place.
