It was famous for Confucian Temple and Guozijian (Imperial Academy or Imperial College), hence the name “Chengxian Street” and also called “Guozijian Hutong”. It is one of the finest ancient streets in Beijing: the lofty decorated archway and ancient houses enveloped by green shade embody the classical features of Beijing’s streets. Guozijian Street was designated as a Beijing-level cultural relic protection unit in 1984. It is the only street with decorated archways preserved in Beijing. There are four archways in the street: each of the east and west entrance has a street archway titled “Chengxian Street"; on the left and right side near the Imperial College, there is a street archway titled "Guozijian". There are also some other historical sites such as Han Wengong Temple that is consecrated to Han Yu, the great litterateur of the Tang Dynasty, Huoshen Temple built in the Ming Dynasty, and Zaojun Temple offered sacrifices to the Kitchen God.
