The design of the Beijing Grand Canal Museum draws inspiration from three elements of the ancient canal scene: boats, sails, and water. Using the canal as a central theme, the architecture integrates historical and cultural elements. The shared hall's roof is shaped like a "boat," and the exhibition building's roof is shaped like a "sail." Between the two buildings lies a leisure water street approximately 270 meters long and 20 meters wide, where the old canal once flowed.
The Grand Canal Museum has a building area of approximately 99,700 square meters. It features four main types of exhibitions: permanent exhibits, special exhibitions, open displays, and temporary exhibitions. Visitors board the "Canal Boat," experiencing a journey through time to engage in a dialogue with the millennia-old culture of canal transport.
On the second floor of the exhibition building, the "Beijing and the Grand Canal History and Culture Exhibition" is currently being held. This exhibition focuses on the close relationship between the Grand Canal and Beijing, highlighting the themes of people, water, and the city. It tells the story of the canal's development from its inception in the Spring and Autumn period to the present-day Grand Canal Cultural Belt, showcasing over a thousand artifacts. The "Immersive Experience Exhibition" on the third floor features the largest three-dimensional diffraction system installation in any domestic museum, allowing visitors to travel through time and explore the Grand Canal.
The museum also offers five cultural and creative spaces: Canal Scenery (cultural and creative space), Canal Bookstore (reading space), Dockside Café, Canal Dining Boat (dining services), and Canal Shop (cultural and creative experience), providing souvenirs, dining, and other services.
