It originated as the Beiping Institute of Biology in 1928, later becoming the Specimen Exhibition Hall of the Institute of Zoology in 1957. It officially opened to the public on May 17, 2009.
Upon entering the hall, the most striking feature is the 24-meter-long skeleton model of a blue whale, the largest mammal in the ocean. The Endangered Species Hall and Bird Hall are located on either side of the first floor, showcasing many large animal specimens. The Endangered Species Hall displays extremely rare animals like the South China tiger and the baiqi dolphin, most of which are classified as national first or second-class protected wildlife.The Bird Hall is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, featuring around 550 specimens out of the nearly 1,500 bird species found in China. Birds from various regions are brought together here, with species from the same family placed next to each other. The hall also includes a variety of raptors and songbirds, offering a magnificent visual feast.
The second floor features three exhibition halls: the Animals and Humans Hall, the Insect Hall, and the Butterfly Hall. The Animals and Humans Hall showcases specimens of unique and rare animals native to China, including both well-known animal stars and unfamiliar species.The Insect Hall highlights the most diverse group of organisms on Earth, with over a million known species, representing a broad array of insect groups. The Butterfly Hall displays over 2,200 species of butterflies from 15 families, including 10 national butterflies from various countries. The dazzling array of these natural wonders is sure to captivate and amaze every visitor.
The basement features four major exhibition halls, where visitors can learn about animal classification and naming principles, observe the achievements of national biosafety efforts, marvel at the wonders of microscopic life, and explore various zoological topics through special themed exhibitions. The Content Exchange Hall frequently updates its exhibits, ranging from scientific-themed displays to photography and art exhibitions, and even special competitions showcasing various specimens.
