Restoring the old as classically matching is the most important principle. Li Shanqiu, the renovation project manager of Grand Canal Yongtong Bridge told reporters, Yongtong Bridge deck about 800 square meters with over several repairs. There are about 2,000 stones, and the oldest of which is nearly 600 years old. "We restored the bridge deck and surrounding stones to original positions. Through looking at ancient books, and conculting experts and scholars, we found the same material of stones to fill the missing parts, as far as possible to maintain the original appearance of the ancient bridge."
Wanning bridge is located on the central axis of Beijing, north to Di 'an Gate and south to Drum Tower, also known as Houmen Bridge or Haizi Bridge. It was built in the Yuan Dynasty with the original name of Wanning Bridge.
Lugou Bridge is built over the Yongding River in Fengtai District, about 15km southwest of Beijing. As the Yongding River is called Lugou River in the old days, the bridge got its name. It is the oldest stone arch bridge at present in Beijing.
It is said that in the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, the emperor made a tour in plain clothes and came across obstruction caused by the river. A minister Heshen immediately ordered to fetch silver ingots from the palace and pave a road over the river for the emperor. Therefore, it was called Yinding Bridge since “Yinding” means sycee, a type of ancient Chinese money.
All traces of modern repair such as asphalt and cement joints of the ancient bridge were removed, and the old mortar was used to restore it. Yongtong Bridge is expected to be open to the public as a historical and cultural monument in 2023.
