There is such a hutong in Beijing, which preserves the brick arches of the late Qing Dynasty, the hutong theater, and the famous Central Academy of Drama. Dongmianhua Hutong is adjacent to the most famous commercial street, Nanluo, but it is quiet and relaxing.
Dongmianhua Hutong was originally called Mianhua Hutong, but later, the word "Dong (East)" was added to distinguish it from the "Mianhua Hutong" in the Xicheng District. It is a place where you will find the old Beijing life. The residents here sunbathe and ride their bicycles, chat, and walk their dogs.
Nowadays, most of the buildings in Dongmianhua Hutong are residential houses. No.15 residential house seems no different from others, but the two small stone lions at the entrance still reveal a touch of extraordinary grandeur. This was once the house of General Fengshan in the late Qing Dynasty. The quadrangle with three courtyards has an arch-shaped coupon door of Chinese and Western-style, which was listed as a cultural relics protection unit in Beijing in 2001. The coupon door is finely crafted, and the patterns of flowers, animals, and auspiciousness on the wall are still clearly visible.
Wudaoying Hutong is tranquil, artful, and slow-paced, telling a new story of the old Hutong with another appearance.
It is the oldest business street in Beijing with a history of about 800 years. This famous commercial street specialized in selling tobacco pouches, calligraphy and paintings and jade articles during the Qing Dynasty
It is one of the finest ancient streets in Beijing: the lofty decorated archway and ancient houses enveloped by green shade embody the classical features of Beijing’s streets.
It is said that the Hutong was once a cotton market ( cotton means mianhua in Chinese), so it is called Mianhua Hutong.
